Year–Round Tips

Use & Maintain Smoke Dectectors.
Test smoke detectors weekly.
Replace batteries when needed or when you change your clock.
Have a Fire Escape Plan.
Know where fire exits are, even when vacationing.
Be sure exits are clear and accessible.
Use Carbon Monoxide Detectors.
Co Detectors save lives.
Now required in dwellings built after September 30, 2005.

Summer Tips

Gas grills
Never use indoors.
Keep a safe distance from buildings.
Be sure connections are not leaking by using dish soap to check for leaks.
Do not store propane tanks indoors.

Charcoal grills
Never use indoors.
Never use lighter fluid or an accelerant on an already lit grill.
Be careful when disposing of hot coals, they may smolder for days.
Never place hot coals in combustible container or on a combustible surface.
Electric Appliances
Electricity and water do not mix.
Keep a safe distance from water.
Use Ground Fault Interrupter (GFI) outlets to prevent electrocution when near water.
Gasoline
Keep gasoline away from children.
Gasoline is extremely dangerous.
Can self ignite at high temperatures.
Only store in proper containers (not glass).
Properly label and use approved containers for gasoline.
Store away from heat and electric spark sources.
Never store gasoline in a car.
Best stored in a shed or garage away from the house.
Just one drop of gasoline in the lungs could be fatal.
Fireworks
Are illegal and very dangerous.
Non-aerial and non-explosive sparklers and fountains not over 100 grams are legal for age 16 and over.
Sparklers and fountains are still very dangerous due to intense heat and sparks produced.
Children
Please remember children need your guidance and assistance.
Keep a watchful eye near water, at a pool or the beach.
Adult supervision is imperative.

Fall & Winter Tips

Furnaces
Service yearly to keep them operating properly and efficiently.
Fireplaces and wood stoves
Check for leaks and proper operation.
Installation of any heating system requires a permit.
Hire a professional to perform the system installation.
Chimneys and vent pipes
Checked and cleaned periodically to prevent blockage and creosote buildup.
Be sure all heating appliances are vented properly to prevent carbon monoxide from venting into occupied living spaces.
Store combustible materials away from sources of heat.
Do not to overload electrical circuits with appliances, lighting or decorations.
Store flammable liquids in a safe area and not in your home or basement, this includes gasoline and propane.
