Christmas Tree Fire Safety Seminar PSA

East Haven Fire Department

Over the last (10) years, the United States has averaged 200 Christmas tree fires each year. Each year these fires cause an average of 14.8 million dollars in damage. A fatality occurs in 1 out of every 32 Christmas Tree fires.

Here are some tips we would like to share for keeping you and your family safe during the holidays.

1. Cut your live trees at a 45-degree angle and immediately place them in water.

        a. Water your tree every day.

2. Keep your tree 3 feet away from any heat source.

        a. 24% of fires are caused by being too close to a heat source.

3. Use lights approved by a nationally recognized laboratory such as Underwriter Labs.

4. Before you begin using your Christmas lights and electrical cords inspect them for damage and fraying.

          a. 1/3 of all Christmas tree fires are caused by an electrical problem.

5. Do not leave your tree lights on if you are sleeping or not at home.

6. Discard your trees immediately after Christmas.

a. 80% of all Christmas tree fires occur in December and January.

The East Haven Fire Department would like to remind you to check to see that your home has working smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. It is recommended that you have one on each level of your home, outside your bedrooms, and in each bedroom. If you should have a fire in your home early notification can save your life.

The holidays are a great time to check your detectors batteries.
